2017 Labour Council Scholarships

The Hamilton and District Labour Council will select up to three recipients of scholarships of $1,000 each for the 2017-2018 academic year from eligible applicants.

Two scholarships are available for students entering the first year of an undergraduate post-secendary program of studies at a university, community college, or eqivalent.

One scholarship is available to a student entering the second year or beyond of an undergraduate post-secondary program.

A copy of official documentation from the school showing the student's acceptance or registration into the first year of a post-secondary program is required. Documentation to support a student's continuing registration in an undergraduate post-secondary program is required if applying for the scholarship for the second year or beyond.

A parent or official guardian of the applicant must be a member of a union affiliated to the Hamilton and District Labour Council.

A signed application form (available at the bottom of the page) and supporting materials must be received in the Labour Council office by 4:00 pm on Friday, September 29, 2017.

The student is required to write a 750 to 1000 word essay on the following topic:

Assess the impact of the $15 & Fairness campaign on the labour movement and on young workers entering the labour force today and in the future.

To get started, consult the website 15andfairness.org. Although this essay is not meant to be a major scholarly assignment, a good essay will include more than information from this website. Sources should be noted properly using footnotes or endnotes.  (Notes and source listings are not included in the word count.) The essay must be typed and double spaced. Please use a font size that is read easily (not less than 11 pt.)

Please submit documentation and the essay to:
