Labour Day Parade & Picnic––September 2, 2019

The Hamilton and District Labour Council is pleased to host the annual Labour Day Parade and Picnic in honour of workers and their unions. Our theme this year is UNITE AGAINST RACISM, OPPRESSION and AUSTERITY!

So, what's new?

The parade route. The parade starts at its traditional time--10:30 am. Unions and solidarity groups line up on Stuart St. and head south on Bay St. to York Blvd., east on York Blvd. to James St., north on James St. to Strachan St., west on Strachan to Harbour Front Drive and into Bay Front Park.

There will be paramedics at the picnic site.

There will be a kids' zone consisting of a bouncy castle and activities provided by the Workers' Arts & Heritage Centre.

The entire stretch of Metrolinx parking (from James St. to Hess St.) will be open and free! Entrance on James St..

We are asking non-affiliated locals of HDLC to make a donation to help cover the costs of the parade and event. Recommended donation amount: $100-$250 depending on the size of the local.

What's the same?

The BBQ/picnic/entertainment following the parade takes place at BAY FRONT PARK. The parade steps off at 10:30 am.

If your local plans on having a BBQ at its own site, the City's regulations have changed regarding the permitting and requirements. Please get in touch with Labour Council for advice and guidance in being compliant.

There will be a porta-potty on Stuart St. and Caroline for those who have to line up down that side of Stuart St. before the parade starts. If other restrooms are needed en route, we're recommending the facilities in the Jackson Square (York Blvd. entrance) which we've learned will be open during the parade.

There will be a Quench Buggy water refill station/fountain on site for those who wish to refill water bottles of get a drink of water during the picnic.

Advance tickets for food/soft drinks will NOT be sold before the picnic. If you'd like tickets for your members once they get to the park, send a member of your Executive over to sign for the number of tickets you'd like and we'll give them to you at that time and invoice you later. We trust your local is good for it!

BBQ/picnic sites will be determined and the locations distributed in the near future. Contact the Labour Council at hdlc@cogeco.net to confirm that your group wants a site. The HDLC is charging a $50 fee green/clean up fee per local for the additional costs of recycling and waste management of garbage at the park.

Important: Affiliates and groups planning to serve their own food must obtain approval of Public Health by submitting the required document to the Hamilton and District Labour Council by August 15, 2019 (to avoid late fees.) There is a fee of $38 per application. The city requires that the Labour Council, as the event host, makes one payment for the total fees. Do not pay the fee in advance –– the Labour Council will invoice you. Click here to review public health requirements.

The United Way will BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs, available for a reasonable price. Beer will be sold for consumption within a licensed area.

Entertainment will be provided by the Andre Bisson R&B Band, members of HMG293.

If you have members who would like to volunteer with set up (Sunday), tear down (Monday) or as a marshal during the parade, let us know!
