Brother Malcolm Buchanan Recognized by OFL

November 7, 2025

The HDLC is pleased to learn one of our long-time delegates and Political Action Workgroup Chair, Brother Malcolm Buchanan (from the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation) will be one of five people recognized on the OFL’s Labour Honour Roll for the 2025 OFL Convention.

Included below is the nomination letter the HDLC submitted to the OFL which was endorsed by OSSTF Provincial Executive and Congress of Union Retirees…

The Hamilton and District Labour Council is honoured to nominate Brother Malcolm Buchanan for induction into the 2025 OFL Labour Honour Roll.

Malcolm is a retired educator, a lifelong trade unionist, and a tireless advocate for working people whose profound contributions to Ontario’s labour movement have left a lasting legacy of solidarity, justice, and hope.

For decades, Malcolm embodied the best of working-class values and activism. As a teacher at Parkview Secondary School in Hamilton, he not only nurtured academic learning but also instilled in his students a deep sense of social responsibility. His commitment to fairness and public education naturally extended into trade union leadership through the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF). Rising through the ranks, Malcolm served as Provincial President and later as General Secretary of OSSTF, where he championed equitable working conditions, professional respect for educators, and the critical role of strong unions in delivering quality public services.

Notably, under his leadership, Malcolm was instrumental in bringing OSSTF into the Canadian Labour Congress, strengthening ties between education workers and the broader labour movement. Malcolm’s commitment to solidarity has always transcended the boundaries of his own sector. During the Ontario Days of Action in the late 1990s — a province-wide mobilization of workers and community groups to resist the devastating austerity of Mike Harris’s “Common Sense Revolution” — Malcolm played a pivotal role as one of the provincial organizers. His leadership helped galvanize thousands to stand up against attacks on public services and to defend Ontario’s most vulnerable.

Even in retirement, Malcolm’s dedication to working people has never wavered. He is an active force within the Local Active Retired Members Chapter of OSSTF and currently serves as President of the local chapter of the Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC), ensuring that the voices and experiences of older workers continue to shape our movement. Remarkably, Malcolm has done more for working-class causes in retirement than many accomplish in a lifetime.

Beyond union offices, Malcolm’s activism spans multiple community struggles. He is a steadfast activist in the Hamilton Healthcare Coalition and the Hamilton Chapter of the Council of Canadians, advocating passionately for public healthcare and social programs. As a former member of the HDLC Executive and the long-time Chair of our Political Action Workgroup, Malcolm has consistently advanced campaigns that challenge austerity, confront inequality, and build grassroots power. His strategic insights, relentless commitment, and quiet yet determined presence have been instrumental in shaping the political landscape for working people in Hamilton and across Ontario.

Malcolm Buchanan stands as a powerful example of principled, lifelong activism. His work exemplifies solidarity across generations and sectors, reflecting the diversity and collective strength of our movement. In every role he has held (teacher, union leader, retiree activist, community organizer) Malcolm has demonstrated an unwavering belief in the dignity of workers and the transformative power of collective action.

It is with deep respect and solidarity that we nominate Brother Malcolm Buchanan for the OFL Labour Honour Roll. His life’s work serves as an inspiration for all who continue the struggle for a more just and equitable society.
