Applicants MUST meet the following requirements:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
- have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
Hamilton & District Labour Council Community Organizer
The Hamilton and District Labour Council is hiring a summer student as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program for the position of community organizer.
Start date: July 11th, 2022
End date: September 2nd, 2022
Contract length: 8 weeks
Hours: 35 hours per week
Wage: $20 per hour
Location: HDLC currently has office space at 51 Adair Avenue South, however, we will work with the successful applicant to ensure COVID-19 healthy & safety guidelines are followed. This may mean applicants working remotely some of the time.

About HDLC:
Hamilton and District Labour Council (HDLC) is an umbrella group that brings together local unions so that collectively we can better represent our members, defend free collective bargaining, assist the unorganized and generally improve the quality of life in our city. HDLC is made up of elected delegates from affiliated unions and acts as the voice of working people in Hamilton. We work within our unions and community to actualize our anti-racist, anti-oppressive and social justice values.
Core work areas including but not limited to:
- Data collection and research: build databases for HDLC, help with surveys and research projects
- Community outreach: support work with unions and community organizations in line with HDLC’s values
- Social media: help manage HDLC’s communications and social media pages
- Required skills and experience:
- Microsoft Office. NationBuilder or similar programs are considered an asset.
- Experience in Facebook, Twitter and Social Media Platforms.
- Website design skills are an asset.
- Experience in or willingness to learn about community organizing.
- Strong writing and communication skills.
- Demonstrated social justice values.
A computer and home internet access is considered an asset but not necessary as accommodations can be made.
