Save Ontario

Hamilton’s working class families can’t spend the next four years looking for a villain in Washington D.C. while the cities of Ontario are crumbling around us.

The Save Ontario plan was conceived by the Hamilton and District Labour Council as a way to focus the priorities of our city during a provincial election campaign where messaging is being pulled away from the concerns of day-to-day working class families.

Doug Ford has embraced hypocrisy by deeming himself “Captain Canada” claiming to care for the country while we need a plan to save Ontario from his government. Doug Ford’s deep cuts over the past two terms, and over a decade of mismanagement before that by successive McGuinty and Wynne governments, have left our public and social services at death’s door while also literally leaving many vulnerable Ontarians there as well. While Ford is claiming to protect Canada, we need a plan to Save Ontario from Doug Ford.

Our Save Ontario priorities focuses on working class lives and seeks to ensure that our next provincial government (and especially Hamilton’s five MPPs) understand that public services build communities and help to ensure all Hamiltonians and all Ontarians have access to the basic needs of our growing city. These priorities will form the basis of our go forward positions in communicating with elected MPPs from all parties and the government going forward into the next term.

Save Ontario is comprised of the following key priorities:

Save Our Lives – 20% increase to public healthcare staffing.
Save Our Kids – 20% increase to Grants for Student Needs.
Save Our Families – $20/hour minimum wage. Double Ontario Works/Ontario Disability Support Program Rates.
Save Our Homes – Establish cost-share agreement with all levels of government on geared-to-income housing.
Save Our Services – Increase provincial corporate tax, marginal income tax on high incomes, and rates on Capital Gains.
Save Our Planet – Increase Greenbelt, agriculture and other natural protected areas.
